So quick news, because I got my new laptop this week from Frame.Work and I’m really happy with it. So it’s the time for me to make a quick review for the laptop.
Assembling:
I took the DIY version, so the laptop comes with RAM and SSD in their separate box and it’s up to you to install the both in you laptop.
I never saw a laptop so easy to open, few screws, they stays attached to the back of the laptop so you don’t loose them, that’s a super cool feature.
Not much to say for the inside, it’s a laptop, with a few spare screws, each piece got their QRCode (didn’t check here the instructions, cause that’s not my first laptop) but I was really impressed on how easy it was to open.
First Boot:
I wanted this laptop because it was know to work well with Ubuntu (not my favorite linux but will do) and that’s an understatement: I boot on my USB drive, clicked install, and voilĂ .
All devices are running, no WiFi driver to install, the finger print reader works, every thing works. If you ever installed Linux on a laptop you know that this is an achievement on its own.
Day to day use:
Here again, that’s a big whao: The battery life is really impressive, I usually run on low consumption power mode, bluetooth is off, wifi on with my VPN active. The compute have a solid 6+ hours autonomy, with using PyCharm and sharing the 4G of my phone using wired sharing.
and when I say 6+ hours, I mean, after 6h I’m still at 40+% but it’s when I stop. With my usage I could easily keep the same battery cycle for 2 days.
I really enjoy the keyboard, and for the moment the touchpad keep reading my finger, but most of the time I plug a mouse or a trackball because I don’t like using touchpad.
Bonus: I got an HP Thunderbolt dock, I only had to plug the laptop to it, it started charging and all screens were working just like that.
Cons:
The laptop had very few I/O: 4 ports, used for modules (USB 3 A/C, DisplayPort, HDMI) their is no options for any ethernet ports.
I would appreciate an ethernet cable (mostly because the dock is used by multiple computer that needs to be on different networks and mac restricted).
The module are a bit tight to remove, and the screen is a bit too reflective.
But none of those issues are deal breaking.
